I just ordered a Lenovo G590 series with Intel Core i3 processor, 6gb Ram, 500gb HDD, has a 15.6" Display with Windows 8 Pro 64bit license but is downgraded to Win 7 Pro from my "IT" guy. @Lakewood did you upgrade to Windows 8? What do you think? Other thoughts?

I installed win8 on one of my machines. It's not really ready for prime time as a desktop os. I'm planning on getting a couple tablets soon, so I'll be able to review it as a tablet os then.

There is a registry hack which makes it more usable on desktop.

We had Apple IIe's at my elementary. Yes, Oregon trail. I found out last night when installing my new (old) webcam that my wife's old laptop that I resurrected is, well old. I got me a warning message that it was below recommended hardware requirements and may not perform well. I knew it was old but USB 1.1? Dang! When did USB 2.0 come in? What is my most bang for the buck in a not quite so old laptop? I don't want anything new. This will be a brewing/Arduino/GPS/etc field use unit.

I just bought a Lenovo T60 (cirta 2007) on ebay ($95) that is doing me well so far. I upgraded to win 7 ($10, edu email address handy) and put a 60GB SSD from ebay in it ($35). Pretty durn decent for a 6yr old machine for $140. My suggestion for buying a used computer would be to buy an old business laptop. More durable and mostly just used for word processing in their past life.

There are some amazingly cheap new machines from frys.com and tiger direct sometimes too.
