Traveling with a fishing rod

    The last time i got on a plane i was carrying a 3ft long wooden spoon. This time i will be traveling with a 6ft single piece fishing rod... apparently i like getting strange looks and questions at the airport.

    This time it wont be carry-on though, so i made this.

    i might put a handle on it and i'll probably put a label on it with my name.

    You should definitely label that. And maybe put a giant sticker on it that says "ROD CASE". Right now it looks like a pipe bomb and strange looks are the least of your worries after the TSA lays eyes on that prize.

    just one sticker that says "lead lined" should do the job.

    Yup. By far the largest pipe bomb ever. 6ft long. As I was building it I considered putting a string through a hole in the end, just for the effect.

    Yeah, some cool stickers like that will go awesome with the sticker that's says "the Bomb fishing rod case"

    Southwest accepted the rod in the giant abs pipe no problems. No charge for oversize or anything. Nothing but awesome.

    Walked up. Guy asked if it was a fishing pole. I said yes, its a fishing rod. Asked if i had a handle on the tube for the sticker. I said nope and he said ok.

    Fwiw if yojre gonna make one its worth puting a nylon strap handle on ot so they dont have to put the sticker on the fantastic paint job. I'll be adding a handle when i get back home. Just need to decide how to attach it. Pop rivets would be easy but would leave a big lug inside the tube to scratch the rod so thats out.

    Its not a bad idea. Maybe something like an epoxy coated string wrapping so it looks nice. Actually that would be a fitting look since it is a rod holder...

    I was thinking about it. The best way I could come up with was to drill two holes near the middle and "fish" a wire though, then use that to pull some rope though. PITA, but possible.

    i say put a pistol grip on the lower side and carry it on your shoulder. a fake scope would be fun as well.

    It actually shoots foam tipped rockets using compressed air. Pretty fun really.
