Renegade Rye IPA Brew Day
-
Brewing my renegade rye ipa today. Thought I wod post pics of the process. I'll post the recipe later.
-
Mash temp of 151 which is spot on for this beer. To get that mash temp I needed a strike temp of 168.image.jpg3264 x 2448 - 2Mimage.jpg3264 x 2448 - 2M

Draining the mash tun here.image.jpg1480 x 3144 - 2Mimage.jpg1534 x 2314 - 1M
-
Batch sparge #1 with my newly made mash paddle. I shoot for a trike temp of 170-180 degrees for both sparges. I let each one rest for 10 min open, stir and go another 10 min.image.jpg3264 x 2448 - 2M
-
Here's the mash paddle. I had to make this in a rush a few brews ago be use my plastic paddle snapped.image.jpg2996 x 1535 - 1M

Random photo while we wait for batch sparge #2 to finish. This was taken at my sons golf tournament awhile back.image.jpg2049 x 1639 - 793K

Why yes I will have one of these while I wait.image.jpg3264 x 2448 - 2M
-
Time to vourlof (I think I spelled wrong ). Notice how cloudy and full of grain in the first pic and then how it clears.image.jpg3264 x 2448 - 1Mimage.jpg3264 x 2448 - 1M
-
I measure the liquid using my mash paddle. I have holes drilled that tell me the gallons. I needed 7 I'm right at it.image.jpg1497 x 2579 - 1011K
-
Now we wait for the boil to start.
-
Here are the hops. Fz and cb should look away.image.jpg2049 x 1953 - 1M
-
We have achieved boil and first addition is in.image.jpg1770 x 2046 - 904K
-
Oh yeah we are waiting again. Next hop addition is at 40.
-

Wort chiller in at 20 min. Normally, I do this at 5 but I left this outside for a long time so wanted to make sure it was sanitized.image.jpg2049 x 1870 - 832K

Btw, this beer does not seem to be fermenting. There is a little pressure but not much. I guess it could have gotten cold over night and slowed it down? I pitched around 85 degrees so it should have been warm enough to get going?

That should have been enough thermal mass and energy to keep it warm through the night for the yeasties. What's the temp at now?The only thing between me and a train wreck is blind luck..... - Kenny -
I don't know current temp right now. I should put one of those strip thermometers on to check.
-
The yeast was a brand new pack.
-
It started fermenting over night and chugging a long.
