Why not go big, really big...

I'm killing time in Walmart waiting for a prescription, and came across this:

    Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I'm thinking, why NOT brew 50 gallons? One long day, and I think I could fill it by brewing four batches on my system. The only problem I see right now (besides having 50 gallons of the same beer) is I only have eight kegs.

    Thoughts?

Just pull out 1 keg at a time for serving. Use a spiggot or something.

I'm not sure I'll actually do it, but I really want to try. Just for a different challenge.

    buy more kegs
    bottle some of it
Plus if that is 50 gallons you would want some head space for krausen so actually only brew 45 gallons to account for some trub loss then you could fill all your kegs with nothing left over. Also, if you brewed something that could be fermented differently with different yeasts to get different beers. One beer is oaked, one is bourbon another is oaked and bourbon. I think you could make the beers different enough that it wouldn't be 40 gallons of the same beer.

I wasn't thinking earlier but the yeast idea wouldn't work since I am guessing that is your primary fermenter. I do stand by the other ideas.

Heck I don't have any kegs and I'm (slowly) working on a brew rig to make that much beer. Planning on fermenting in same kind of drum (though a free one).

All this talk of foodgrade... worried about cancer or something? Like any of us are going to live long enough at our alcohol consumption rate.

It's supposedly food grade. It's intended to store drinking water when the apocalypse happens. It was in "that" isle.

how do you go about filling it? do you have a large primary fermenter?

Multiple better bottles and several buckets. Around 8 batches over the course of a week. Some were fermented out and some were sweet. All added to the barrel together.

i assume that it's a collaborative effort? that seems like waaay too much of one beer for one person.

Not a collab. Sour solera. And yes. Way too much beer for one person. Really, if anyone local wanted 5 gallons of it I'd let some go. I'd need them to leave some grain at the house though.
