    Spaten is damned good, But I also like the hacker pschorr fest bier, it's just gotta be draft, the bottled stuff is hit or miss

    Great Lakes Oktoberfest blew me away last time I had it. But I was really thirsty and haven't had a ton of O-fest's to compare to. I need to try to find Spaten...

    the only thing i really like from bell's (having not tried the $18/sixer stouts) are two hearted and oarsman ale. the rest are lame.

    I've had the Redhoptober. It's okay. I think most beers are worth trying. I thought it was going to be a Marzen style, but it is not, it's a bit hoppy. I don't think it fits a style.

    Yeah, it doesn't really fit into the normal octoberfest fare. Its basically a fairly malty red that is hopped like an ipa. I thought it was pretty good, but I wasn't looking for a marzen.

    We brewed a double red for beer week, it was a big malty red that was hopped like an IPA, I have a simple recipe I threw together for the event, I rather enjoyed it, as did friends. Perhaps I should post that recipe.

    To resurrect and derail this thread, octoberfest is right around the corner. Any of you hbf-ers throwin an o-fest party. If so, what's on tap? and more importantly, do you live within road trip distance? :D

    I am planning on attending an Oktoberfest affair of some sort, gotta figure out where one is going on out here..... And road trip distance? I could be there in no time!!!

    We are hosting our second annual Grossman Oktoberfest. . I brewed an Octoberfest and a Helles so far. Still to brew a Kolsh and heffeweizen. All are welcome in the greater StL area. German attire is encouraged. I bought a new set of Lederhosen this year and my wife and girls all wear dirndls. We chug from a glass boot, will have some stein hoisting games, deer brats, pumpkin painting. Promises to be a great fest again. So.... after a few steins and a boot of beer, I hope my Octoberfest is my favorite, but this is my first lager, so I'm hoping for the best. Prost!

    Easy .... use any o-fest grain bill you like ... two ways of going with yeast ... either something clean like S-05 ... or .... use an Alt yeast like K-97

    I like them with no pilsner malt ... bout 70% Vienna malt the rest munich with just a tad of caramunich

    Really gives you that orange color .... hops ... perle or magnum for bittering ... light on late additions with just about any noble hop ... I am fond of Spalt
