To bag or not to bag? That is the question.

I have done both in the boil. I don't know if bagging during the boil reduces the effectiveness of the hops? I also don;t like all the sludge if I don't bag pellets. In my mind bagging seems like it would restrictive.

Has anyone done a comparison? What say you?

I've seen several sources that suggest utilization is reduced by bagging. I've also never seen any lab quality studies that indicate this result.

I tried this once but two of the bags decided to untie themselves in the boil so it was all moot. And after trying to clean the bags (and still having to clean the kettle) i just gave up on the whole idea.

yeah, i bagged once, but i usually have at least 4 hop additions and sometimes as many as 20, so it was really pointless. i don't even bag when i dry hop anymore (whole hops) just dump em in and gently push em down and walk away.
